Today’s opening of the premier inpatient addiction facility on the East Coast, Bluff marks a unique new partnership for alcohol and drug rehabilitation treatment as a progressive, chronic, relapsing and potentially fatal disease.

“The Bluff sets a new standard for addiction treatment by linking the top of academic medicine with the best practices in addiction treatment to implement the New Paradigm that has been pioneered by the state Physician Health programs,” said Dr.Robert DuPont, President, Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc., First Director (1973 to 1978) National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and Second White House Drug Czar. “The new paradigm starts with high quality addition treatment and emersion in the 12-step fellowships. This is followed by intensive monitoring for any use of alcohol or other drugs and by creative strategies to address coexisting conditions and other threats to long-term recovery. Pain management among patients with histories of substance abuse is one of the most challenging areas of addiction medicine today. That too is a specialty of Bluff.”

Bluff entered into a mutually beneficial collaboration with the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. The affiliation offers MCG an opportunity to train medical students, interns, residents, and practicing academic physicians in the new field of addiction medicine- the evaluation and treatment of substance abuse. Bluff patients will benefit from the MCG academic experts and technology to bring science driven, evidence-based therapy and medical advances in order to deliver the most comprehensive end-to-end recovery services available for patients suffering from substance abuse.

“The training of addiction physicians and treatment of patients by experts has lagged while the nation’s number one unmet health problem continues to worsen,” said Dr. Bertha Madras, Professor of Psychobiology, Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Harvard University and former White House Deputy Drug Czar. “Bluff is uniquely positioned to address this problem as the only detox and recovery center in America led by a medical director Dr. Jacobs who has unique expertise as the only triple board certified in Addiction Medicine, Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Chief in the United States.”

Dr. William Jacobs, Chief of Addiction Medicine at MCG, will head Bluff. In addition to insights from its affiliation with the medical school, the Bluff system employs the successful Malibu Beach Recovery treatment method. This holistic approach is specifically designed to repair the brain’s reward system while providing clients with the necessary tools to maintain long-term sobriety.

The Bluff addiction program is modeled on the Malibu Beach recovery program in focus and design. After a comprehensive academic evaluation and treatment planning, Dr. Jacobs’s detoxification process incorporates five therapeutic modalities, which help to effectively alleviate the physical discomfort that accompanies withdrawal from alcohol, street drugs and addictive prescription medication. These include:

  1. RecoveryMind Training™
  2. Exercise & Yoga program.
  3. Mindfulness & Well-being program.
  4. Healthy eating program.
  5. Clinical therapy program.
  6. Psycho-Spiritual program.

The five-step program takes place among five-star amenities offered at the 178-acre Bluff on the Savannah River. Patients enjoy a broad range of amenities including equine therapy; meditation; yoga; and magnificent nature trails. Luxurious cottages on the campus’s grounds display stunning views, plush full-sized beds, limestone baths, flat panel HDTV’s and a private porch.

“We treat addiction as a chronic disease similar to diabetes, but unlike other chronic illnesses an addicted mind isn’t necessarily open or willing to change,” said Dr. Jacobs. “Because recovery is hard, we created the perfect environment along the Savannah River with a very high dose of treatment and top-notch amenities. The comfortable, serene setting helps to effectively reach patients.  Our first job is to help the addicted mind to change. Then we provide the tools to help the person make that change permanent.”

Bill Jacobs is a leader in our field of Addiction Medicine He has made major contributions to our field including in the difficult area of pain and addiction I congratulate him on his new position at the Bluff,” said Dr. David Smith, American Society of Addiction Medicine, Past President, Founder of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics & Professor University of California San Francisco.

Affiliation with Medical College of Georgia
The opening of the Bluff represents Georgia’s first ever partnership between an addiction treatment center and an accredited medical school.  Together, these two organizations work in tandem to develop and advance scientifically driven treatments that are based on outcomes data, evidence-based methods, experiential learning and continuous rehabilitation. This innovative relationship will increase awareness, deter substance abuse and increase access to treatment in Georgia.

Making addiction medicine part of the curriculum for medical students and residents and continuing education for current practitioners through the Medical College of Georgia will provide Georgia residents more access to quality treatment.
