The Role of Nutrition in Recovery

During rehab, the holistic addiction therapy of good nutrition is vitally important. It’s common for people to enter inpatient drug and alcohol rehab malnourished. They often have little appetite, indigestion and other gastrointestinal problems both from the use of substances and poor eating habits over a long period of time.

Eating a healthy diet strengthens the immune system, and gives the bones, muscles, skin and all of the organs the nourishment needed to repair the damage caused by exposure to the toxic chemicals in drugs and alcohol.

A healthy diet also helps heal the brain. Drug and alcohol abuse interferes with brain’s intricate chemistry, causing levels of naturally occurring dopamine to plummet. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is involved in many essential brain functions, including regulating emotions, mental clarity and feelings of pleasure.

Eating nutritious and satisfying food, on a regular schedule, replenishes dopamine naturally. This helps stave off cravings and prevent mood swings that can contribute to relapse.

Through Bluff’s rehab program, patients are exposed to horticulture and gardening, taking care of our onsite vegetable and herb gardens. The simple act of digging in the dirt, planting seeds and watering plants is relaxing and meditative, and gets people back in touch with what is deeply satisfying about the sights, sounds and smells of nature.

Then, using fresh vegetables and herbs grown in the gardens on our grounds, the chefs at Bluff create meals brimming with flavor and important nutrients. This exposes patients to meals that will help to sustain them when they return to life after treatment.

Our chefs prepare a hot breakfast, lunch, dinner, and several snacks daily. This focus on nutrition replenishes vitamins and minerals, boosts dopamine naturally, and gives the body what it needs to repair itself from the damage caused by alcohol addictions and drug abuse.

Bluff customized recovery meal plans in holistic rehab contain:

  • Antioxidants – Antioxidants are powerful nutrients that support the immune system, boosting its ability to protect cells from damage that can lead to cancer. Fruits and vegetables, such as berries, apples, broccoli, peppers and carrots, are high in antioxidants.
  • Fiber – Fiber aids in digestion, helping food pass through the digestive tract. Foods that are high in fiber also help you feel satisfied for longer. For people in recovery, returning fiber to the diet through whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables is important in restoring digestive health.
  • Dopamine – boosting foods – Almonds, bananas, avocados and eggs are known to boost dopamine naturally. Our chefs are masters at incorporating these foods into meals.
  • Healthy proteins – Protein helps the body rejuvenate itself by repairing damaged cells and making new ones. Healthy proteins found in fish, poultry and beans are very important components of a recovery meal plan.
  • Satisfying snacks – Regularly eating healthy snacks such as nuts, fruit and cheese help regulate blood sugar and stabilize mood.

Physical Wellness

As with nutrition, physical activity during drug and alcohol rehab is another holistic activity that is important in healing the whole person. Exercise builds muscles lost to addiction, improves flexibility to prevent injuries, and improves cardiovascular and circulatory health. Incorporating physical activity into a daily routine also promotes a good night’s sleep.

Physical activity benefits the brain directly as well. Exercise is an incredibly effective way to improve the mood and promote relaxation by raising levels of dopamine. At Bluff, we create customized exercise plans that take into account each person’s current level of fitness, health conditions and any injuries they may have. Patients have a variety of options.

Yoga and Meditation

Gentle yoga and meditation is an important component of holistic drug and alcohol rehab at Bluff. During residential treatment, our clinical and therapeutic experts teach best practices for developing meditation skills, which are proven and effective methods for achieving better self-awareness, enabling the management of anxiety, depression, stress, addiction and rejuvenating one’s mind, body and spirit. Meditation is incorporated on a daily basis as part of our holistic program.

Nature Hikes

Bluff is set on nearly 200-acres of rolling hills by the Savannah River outside Augusta, GA. Nature trails, lined by mossy oaks, meander throughout our property. For those up to a brisk walk, nature hikes can improve muscular fitness, heart health and brain health.

Some patients may only be up to a gentle walk of 10 or 15 minutes initially. This too is beneficial, offering time to reflect, relax and breathe the fresh air, which improves the sense of well-being and internal peace.

Spiritual Care

Addiction can lead people to betray their values and morph into someone they no longer recognize. The compulsion to seek out and use drugs and alcohol often crowds out everything else that once mattered – family, friends, work and even one’s sense of self. Overcoming guilt and shame, and restoring a person’s self-esteem, faith in themselves and connection with a higher power, is important to help individuals make sense of their past and move forward to a happier and healthier future.

Through our holistic treatment center, we support individuals as they undergo this inner transformation and explore who they want to be in sobriety. Through the 12 steps, prayer and meditation, we guide individuals in rediscovering their spirituality, and experiencing the joy that comes from offering fellowship and support to others as they progress in their recovery.

Experiential Activities

Bluff offers several experiential activities that help those in recovery from addiction discover new ways of expressing themselves, gain insights into themselves and others, and explore new pursuits and activities to enjoy as they embark on a sober lifestyle. While therapies that involve talking and listening are very important, experiential activities provide opportunities for first-hand learning in real situations. Participants may be challenged to overcome physical or mental challenges and tap into sources of strength they didn’t know they had.

Equine-assisted therapy

Our equine-assisted therapy program is one of the finest in the nation. Through interacting with horses, many of which are rescue animals who had been abandoned or abused in their past, individuals learn about resilience, and how to nurture a relationship and how to build trust.

Art

Through art, patients have the opportunity to express thoughts and emotions in color, drawings, pottery and other crafts. This helps people tap into their creativity, explore their feelings and provides a reminder of how enjoyable sober activities can be.

Ropes Course

By taking part in guided challenges presented by our ropes course, patients practice skills such as critical-thinking, planning ahead and working as a team. As participants overcome each challenge, their confidence in their ability to stick with a problem until they've solved it grows.
